What Does CAPM® Establish?
CAPM® is a foundational, knowledge-based credential. It demonstrates that defined project management knowledge has been assessed; it does not represent years of project leadership experience.
CAPM® and PMP® Serve Different Professional Stages
CAPM® does not require prior project management experience. PMP® has separate eligibility requirements that include qualifying experience. CAPM® is not a prerequisite for PMP®.

What Is the CAPM® Certification?
The Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® is a professional certification awarded by PMI. It assesses foundational project management knowledge without requiring candidates to first accumulate years of project management experience.
CAPM® is not simply a shortened version of PMP®. It addresses an earlier stage of professional development: building the language, concepts, frameworks and reasoning needed to understand how projects operate across different delivery environments.

Foundational Does Not Mean Insignificant
CAPM® is often described as an entry-level certification because it does not require prior project management experience. A more useful description is foundational.
The certification establishes a formal knowledge base that can support later professional experience. Candidates need to recognize concepts, distinguish between related ideas and apply project management reasoning to situations represented on the examination.

It does not represent several years of project leadership experience and should not be interpreted as equivalent to PMI's experience-based PMP® certification.
