Course Overview

1-Day Project Risk Management Workshop

This course gives project managers and team leads the hands-on skills to embed risk management into every stage of the project lifecycle. Using live demonstrations, case scenarios and ready-to-use templates, participants learn how to build a robust risk register, score and prioritize threats, plan responses, and track residual risk in both predictive and Agile environments.

Target Audience
  • Project / Program Managers, Project Co-ordinators & PMO Analysts

  • Scrum Masters & Product Owners seeking stronger risk control

  • Engineers, consultants, and team leads responsible for deliverables

Overview

Session 1 – Foundations of Project Risk

  • Risk vs. Issue vs. Assumption: definitions, lifecycle placement, and why the distinctions matter.

  • Linking risk appetite and tolerance to sponsor expectations and project objectives.

  • Overview of qualitative vs. quantitative assessment and when to use each approach.

Session 2 – Risk Identification & Categorisation

  • Structuredtechniques for discovery: brainstorming, checklists, SWOT, and PESTLE.

  • Crafting clear cause-event-impact statements and entering them in a risk register.

  • Case-study activity: identify and classify the top ten threats/opportunities for a sample infrastructure project.

Session 3 – Qualitative Assessment & Prioritisation

  • Building a Probability–Impact (P-I) matrix and establishing scoring criteria.

  • Heat-map visualisation: ranking and communicating risks to the steering committee.

  • Distinguishing risk magnitude from urgency and deciding when an item becomes an “issue.”

Session 4 – Response Planning & Controls

  • Choosing response strategies: Avoid, Mitigate, Transfer, Accept/Exploit.

  • Aligning preventive, detective, corrective, and directive controls with the 4T model.

  • Risks and Opportunities responses

  • Case-study exercise: create mitigation and contingency plans for the three highest-ranked risks.

Session 5 – Monitoring, Reporting & Lessons Learned

  • Tracking residual risk with burndown charts, RAID logs, and review cadence.

  • Designing concise risk dashboards for PMO and sponsor reporting.

  • Capturing lessons learned and updating the organisational risk library for continuous improvement.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Build a project-specific risk register with clear ownership and due dates.

  • Prioritise threats and opportunities using qualitative scoring.

  • Select and document appropriate response strategies (avoid, transfer, mitigate, accept/exploit).

  • Integrate risk actions into schedules, sprints, and status reports.

  • Communicate risk status to sponsors, PMOs, and teams using dashboards and heat maps.
